Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that exists as two geometric isomers: cis-resveratrol and trans-resveratrol – the latter being the naturally occurring form. It is trans-resveratrol that is the nutritional supplement product of which all research, regarding the benefits of the compound, are conducted upon. The benefits of trans-resveratrol include a healthier functioning heart, a reduced risk of cancer, and perhaps most importantly, the potential to extend our lifespan.

How longevity of life is possible is due to resveratrol prolonging the length of time our cells are able to repair damaged molecules, called RNA. We are susceptible to age-related illnesses as we grow older because our cells are unable to efficiently repair themselves, and our RNA becomes damaged, rendering our defenses against diseases useless. But with the help of resveratrol our cells can actually fend for us at optimum capacity. It is absolute key, though, that the nutrient must first reach our bloodstream for any beneficial effect to occur. Unfortunately, the latest research shows that this is not usually the case.

The highest trans-resveratrol content in a supplement product is standardized at 50% concentration, and if applied with an enteric coating, it can increase the level of trans-resveratrol in our bloodstream. This is where most manufacturers of the products are unsuccessful, because they don’t use the correct form of the compound, or simply disregard the use of an enteric coating completely.

Resveratrol is only beneficial when it can reach our upper intestine and pass through to our bloodstream. To ensure that it does exactly that, the manufacturer of the supplement must use the correct form of trans-resveratrol, and encase it in an enteric coating. It is definitely not a good idea for manufacturers to provide resveratrol in other forms, such as powder or liquid, because then the benefits of the compound are, at best, greatly diminished – and more than likely, completely non-existent.

Blood tests have been conducted on people who have been drinking red wine, or taking uncoated resveratrol supplements, and the results showed that neither methods of intake produced a significant increase of trans-resveratrol in their bloodstreams. Therefore, taking resveratrol supplements manufactured correctly, is definitely the way to go.

There is a negative theory that trans-resveratrol causes a steep rise in activity of a particular gene that reduces a free radical, superoxide, to another free radical, hydrogen peroxide. The molecules of superoxide are not very toxic, but they may cause the degeneration of DNA over time. To combat against this, resveratrol supplements should also be comprised of vitamin C, enzymes and glutathione. Vitamin C has the effective counter-active task of reducing hydrogen peroxide to the more harmless water, and the presence of enzymes and glutathione ensure that vitamin C will continue to remain active for a prolonged period of time.

Though there are a lot of different nutrients in existence that are beneficial to our health, it would be unthinkable to include all of them in our diet. This is where the ease of taking supplements come in. Resveratrol supplements are highly recommended for those wanting to live out a healthy, active and prolonged life, though please be sure to choose a manufacturer that provides top quality resveratrol supplements.

It’s been in the news quite a bit lately. Resveratrol is getting a lot of attention, and rightly so. There’s another compound that is just as beneficial, but lesser known. It’s called quercetin, and it’s believed to contribute to the great health benefits that resveratrol offers.

Both quercetin and resveratrol are plant-derived. It can be found in onions, red grapes, cranberries, tomatoes, citrus, and dark green, leafy veggies. A study from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry said that organic tomatoes contained almost 80% more quercetin than tomatoes grown in the normal fashion. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can prevent cancer, and quercetin might just be part of the reason.

Another informative study makes a connection between resveratrol and quercetin, and weight loss. Both compounds have been shown in individual lab tests to inhibit fat cell growth by up to 15%. When taken in tandem, quercetin and resveratrol reduced fat buildup by almost 70%. Fresh veggies not only fight cancer, they may also contain the key to prevent fat gain in the body.

A spokesman for Longevinex says that quercetin is “one of the secrets of red wine”, and that it works with resveratrol to replenish the tissues of the body. This rebuts an earlier assertion that quercetin inhibits the absorption of resveratrol in the body. There’s no scientific research to back up either claim, and the recommended dosage of a resveratrol/quercetin combination is lower than it would be if the compounds were taken individually- due to the way they work together.

Quercetin may not be the only chemical that can have a symbiotic relationship with resveratrol. Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and selenium might all work together to provide potent anti-cancer and heart disease fighting benefits.

Resveratrol has been found to have various cancer-fighting benefits, and other advantages, like weight loss, and possible life extension. A lot of different foods are sources of resveratrol, like cacao, peanuts, and red wine. There are fun and tasty ways to get your daily dose. If you prefer, there are a lot of supplements available, in powder and capsule form. What is a good daily dose of resveratrol, when should I take it and how much do you have to take to get the full benefits from it?

Just so you know, there aren’t that many long-term resveratrol studies that have been done on people. What we know of its effects on humans is largely anecdotal evidence, and most of the research that has been done has been on animals. Trying to figure out a correct dosage based on an animal study is tricky, but science is working on it every day.

In regards to when you should be taking resveratrol, the time of day doesn’t particularly matter, but it’s usually best to take it with breakfast in the morning. Sticking with a consistent time to take it is also recommended, since you’ll usually form a habit easier that way.

Dosage-wise, at 20mg, people will probably get the anti-aging benefits that resveratrol is known for, according to a pharmaceutical study. 20mg is a great place to start, and taking too much could lead to unpleasant side effects like diarrhea, anemia, anxiety, and thinning of the blood. Practice moderation when taking resveratrol-too much of a good thing, can be a bad thing. A proper dosage can mimic the effects of a calorie-restricted diet. To be safe, base your dosage on your weight. For example, a person weighing 150 lbs. would take a little over 330 mg of resveratrol. Also, if you choose to take resveratrol supplements, simply sticking with the recommended dosage will be more than sufficient.

Until we know for sure what resveratrol does to the human body, it’s up to each of us to determine our appropriate dosage. The safest thing to do would be to start out with a small dose, and increase slowly over the span of a few weeks, until you find the best amount for you. Resveratrol, in moderation, can greatly improve your health and well-being.

Recent scientific research points out that resveratrol, an antioxidant that’s found in grapes and blueberries, can weaken pancreatic cancer cells, increasing their susceptibility to chemo and radiation therapy.

A leading researcher, Paul Okunieff of the University of Rochester Medical Center, says that resveratrol makes the cells more sensitive to radiation, while making normal cells more resistant to the treatments. In a published study, Okunieff and his colleagues dosed a group of cancer cells with 50 milligrams of resveratrol, then they iodized them, which simulates the effects of chemotherapy. A control group of cancer cells was iodized without getting resveratrol first.

Pancreatic cancer has a long history of being chemo-resistant. Scientists have discovered that the digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas act to “wash away” the chemotherapy medications before they have a chance to work. However, in the treated cells, the membrane proteins that do the “cleansing” were inhibited. As they became more sensitive to chemo, the cancer cells were more likely to die.

While the mechanism behind the decreased flushing action wasn’t known, it may be a new side effect of resveratrol usage. The inner workings of the cancer cells were ruined. The mitochondria, the main energy source of the cancer cells, were damaged, hampering the function of the cells and leading to their demise.

Resveratrol, occurring naturally in red wine, has garnered a lot of attention from the scientific and medical communities. People want to know if it is the chemical responsible for the established health benefits of the wine. As is the case with all antioxidants, resveratrol removes free radicals from the blood. Free radicals are a cancer-causing agent, and they also contribute to aging and heart disease.

Resveratrol also has other effects. Studies have shown that the chemical extends the lifespan of organisms like yeast, worms, and fish. The fish that got the resveratrol lived up to fifty percent longer than the fish that didn’t get the potent antioxidant. The treated fish also swam more efficiently, and had greater cognitive ability at the end of their lives. Other studies have shown that resveratrol is also an antifungal/antibacterial, and it can make HIV cells more vulnerable to antiviral drugs. In cells infected with the flu virus, resveratrol reduced their reproductive ability by 90%.

It has also been shown in mice to improve stamina, and to somewhat neutralize the detrimental nature of a high-fat diet. Mice who got the high-fat diet and resveratrol had one-third less likelihood of death than the mice who only got the diet without the resveratrol dosage. This death rate is approximately that of mice eating a normal diet.

There’s quite a bit of research that suggests resveratrol’s various benefits, from preventing skin and esophageal cancer in mice, and it’s been shown under certain circumstances to kill off human fat cells.

the highest natural concentration of resveratrol is found in the skins of red grapes. Peanuts are also a good source, containing about half as much resveratrol as the grapes. Blueberries and other berries contain about 10% as much. The wine’s resveratrol content varies by grape variety, growing location, and length of fermentation. The upper limit is generally thought to be about 30 mg per milliliter. While lower than the dose used in the studies, this amount still could be beneficial in the fight against cancer.

The highest concentrations of resveratrol are found in grape skins. Peanuts contain about half as much resveratrol as grapes, while blueberries and bilberries contain only about 10 percent as much.

Resveratrol has a very promising future as a cancer and heart disease fighter. With all the excitement surrounding it, we definitely haven’t heard the last of it!

It’s seen a lot of news coverage lately, even appearing on 60 minutes. It’s resveratrol, a natural anti-aging compound that’s naturally found in in red wine, and to a lesser extent in blueberries and nuts. Here, we’ll give you an overview of some of the benefits of this wonderful substance.

It is a very potent anti-aging compound, as we previously mentioned. It can mimic the effects of a calorie-restricted diet, which has been shown to reduce the effects of aging on the body. A University of Wisconsin study seems to confirm this. Resveratrol can have the same effect as restricting calories by 20-30%, even if you don’t change a thing about your diet.

This substance may also reduce the amount of fat in your body, and could, in the future, be used to combat obesity. The Endocrine Society’s 90th annual meeting touted this fantastic discovery. Resveratrol may also work to protect your heart. The potent antioxidants found in red wine may help in the regulation of blood sugar levels, by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates into the bloodstream. This in turn will help keep blood pressure lower, and possibly prevent heart disease.

Resveratrol may also improve breast health. It can inhibit the growth of abnormal cells that can lead to a lot of types of breast cancer. This information is according to a study that was published in a July 2008 edition of Cancer Prevention Research. Taking resveratrol may prevent the progression of the disease.

A study from the American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology discovered that resveratrol may keep fatty deposits from building up in the liver, a condition frequently found in those who consume a lot of alcohol. It may activate two molecules (AMPK and SiRT1) which send signals to cells concerning the metabolism of fat in the liver. These molecules can be stunted by alcohol, which can lead to the buildup of fat in the liver..

Resveratrol is also a potent antibacterial agent. It can help protect you from food-born sicknesses, according to a University of Missouri study. Red wines such as pinot noirs and cabernets can block food-borne germs without killing off those beneficial probiotics. Ethanol and resveratrol were both found to have this effect.

In short, you should definitely give it a try. It can fight disease, and is a great anti-aging compound (and the research has been done to prove it!) New research is being done every day, and we are finding more and more things to like about resveratrol.

However, with the research done so far, this doesn’t seem to be a problem when taking resveratrol. Although there are a few side effects that can occur when you are taking high dosages of this nutrient, most all individuals find that it is well worth the small amount of discomfort so that your body can take advantage of the many healthy benefits that it provides.

Short periods of numbness in the arms or legs are a side effect that some have experienced, along with diarrhea, and stomach pain. Pain from tendonitis is another side effect that some have experience and it usually felt in the heel area around the Achilles tendon. Large doses can cause you to feel joint pain that is similar to arthritis. But as long as you stay at a moderate dosage, you’ll be absolutely fine.

When you consider the amazing benefits you receive with a healthier body, you too will agree that taking this nutrient is worth a few minor rough spots. Weight loss is one of the most enjoyed benefits of taking this nutrient, with some individuals losing up to a few pounds in seven days. Many athletes also enjoy taking this amazing nutrient simply because of the increase in muscle mass and endurance that they are able to take advantage of.

Resveratrol is a compound found in plants that promises to be a veritable “fountain of youth.” The discovery of resveratrol has been hailed as one of the largest medical achievements since the development of antibiotics. In several studies with subjects ranging from yeast to mice, overall longevity has been demonstrated to increase by as much as 60%.

In one study, rats fed high –fat diets and treated with resveratrol lived much healthier lives than their non-resveratrol counterparts. As opposed to the un-treated rats, the reservatrol subjects displayed healthier organ tissues and reduced blood sugar while maintaining high amounts of alertness. This corresponds to human life in that we will be able to not only live longer, but enjoy our extended lives as well.

Originally, resveratrol was extracted from the Hellbore plant but eventually it was discovered that the compound was common in the skin of grapes used to make red wine. Researchers now believe that this is what is responsible for the healthful effects of red wine consumption and is behind the remarkable longevity of the French.

Specifically, what enables resveratrol to slow down the aging process is its interaction with DNA. As we age, DNA naturally begins to break down through repeated rounds of copying. Throughout our lives, cells replicate themselves and in the process DNA is lost. Resveratrol seeks to eliminate the DNA loss by improving the accuracy of the replication process, although it is unable to completely eliminate the problem.

In addition to combating the aging process, resveratrol helps to eliminate health problems caused by diets high in calories and fat. Unhealthy diets have been demonstrated to trigger genes deep within our DNA that are linked to heart disease and diabetes. The resveratrol can even reverse the effects of high-fat diets in certain occasions.

While resveratrol has been studied extensively, conclusive evidence has not been found to support these effects in humans. However, judging by the quality of life and longevity that regular resveratrol users experience, it’s safe to assume that passing up this amazing supplement would be a poor decision.

It has been found that one of the main reasons this nutrient is so effective and powerful is the fact that contains antioxidants that are so important to an individuals overall good health.

Where Can Resveratrol Be Found?

One source of this nutrient is found in Japanese Knotweed plants. There are a variety of supplements that are made with the use of these plants simply because they have a high concentration level of this beneficial ingredient. It has also been found that individuals can enjoy an increase in the amazing benefits that it provides when it is taken with other important minerals, vitamins, green tea extract and turmeric. Red wine is another substance that contains this nutrient, however it is in such low levels that a person really cannot benefit from its advantages simply by drinking moderate glasses of red wine.

Fight Back with Resveratrol

Resveratrol is so powerful that it can be extremely effective in helping prevent various forms of cancer. Leukemia is known as a disease that can occur when free radicals are allowed to create cells that are defective and attack cells that are healthy. There have been promising results in this nutrients ability to fight off these free radicals. Diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, Alzheimer’s disease, and even the natural aging process are a few of the other ailments that this nutrient can help to treat.

There are so many benefits that this substance provides, it doesn’t make sense to not take advantage of being able to enjoy a healthier body for longer, by taking it regularly.

Of all the wonderful nutrients that Mother Nature provides us, there are quite a few that boost metabolism and help to minimize the effects of aging. Some of these are pantethine, carnosine, DHA, grape seed extracts, and R-alpha lipoic acid. That’s only a few of them! Most nutrients aid in cell function, with the beneficial side effect of making the cells live longer. Resveratrol is fast becoming one of the foremost of these anti-aging powerhouses….and it has a bonus- it’s also a very potent fat burner.

The drug companies are throwing good money after bad, using various modified forms of resveratrol and selling them as weight-loss supplements, anti-aging medications, and even formulations that claim to combat diabetes. Resveratrol works because it activates the SiRT1 gene, which controls the body’s metabolism of fat, and its aging process. In experiments, resveratrol prevented weight gain in mice that were placed on a high fat diet, and also improved the body’s insulin function. Resveratrol diet supplements do the same thing. The resveratrol formula SRT1720 is six times more effective in the activation of the SiRT1 gene than plain resveratrol. But, plain old resveratrol has its benefits too- one of the biggest being its effect on cardiovascular health.

You may be wondering- what exactly is resveratrol? It first gained interest when it was identified as a possible reason for the “French paradox”, which is the seemingly unique ability of the French people to eat a high fat diet and not end up with heart disease. Resveratrol helps the liver break down fat, and also helps to break down fatty deposits all over the body.

Resveratrol is a stilbenoid, a polyphenol produced in blueberries, grapes and some nuts. It protects the plant from infection by fungi and bacteria, and also protects from the sun’s radiation. Grapes grown in moldy or wet areas have more of this compound than any other food or drink. It’s obvious that resveratrol is a strong antioxidant and antifungal.

Resveratrol differs from flavonoids, which are also found in grapes. Flavonoids may also help with the “French paradox”. Blueberries also contain flavonoids, and a stilbenoid known as pterostilbene. USDA research shows that pterostilbene can help metabolize cholesterol, and slow the buildup of harmful triglycerides. Pterostilbene also helps slow the aging process..

A bottle of red wine can contain anywhere from 2mg to 14mg of resveratrol, with most wines containing a lower concentration. Diet supplements are derived from other sources of resveratrol, like the roots of a plant called Japanese knotweed. This source is more economical than grapes. A dose can range rom a few milligrams up to 100 mg or more.

One of the advantages of resveratrol is its quick absorption, reaching the bloodstream in less than 30 minutes, and it gets metabolized rapidly by the liver.. Take a little at a time rather than one large dose.

As of now, there isn’t much solid human research on resveratrol. What we know about it comes from anecdotal evidence, and some studies done on cells and small animals like mice. The research is very promising, showing a marked increase in life span.

Resveratrol, as we mentioned, activates the SiRT1 gene, which mimics the effects of a calorie restricted diet. When the body takes in less food than normal, SiRT1 activates to break down fat stores to use as fuel and boost energy. It’s basically a way for the body to survive a famine. Restricting calories can extend life span, help metabolize fat and cholesterol, and improve heart health and immune function.

The hormone leptin controls metabolism, and also helps the body survive during famine. When someone eats too much, the body’s fat stores release inflammatory chemicals that force the liver to make its own inflammatory, CRP. This leads to free radical damage throughout the body. As a person gets bigger, the level of inflammation goes up too. The liver gets inundated with the fat it can’t metabolize, which is “fried” by the inflammation running rampant. Arteries get clogged as well, which makes blood pressure go up and the level of “good” cholesterol go down.

Leptin resistance can develop, lowering levels of adiponectin (a fat-derived hormone). This can cause foul moods, and insulin resistance that may lead to type II diabetes. Leptin problems ruin the thyroid, and ramp up those food cravings. Many people suffer from this vicious cycle. They are poisoned by excess food, which makes them in turn want to eat more and more.

Overweight people invariably have high levels of leptin, and it’s not reaching their brains, making them think they are going through famine. Leptin resistance can be caused by overeating, snacking, and nighttime eating. People aren’t naturally equipped to deal with overeating, as historically it has never been a problem. Usually food has been too scarce, so the body comes with ways to deal with starvation- leptin levels drop as fat disappears and the liver activates SiRT1.

With all the interest in leptin and SiRT1, there isn’t much evidence linking the two. Research suggests that SiRT1 is active in parts of the brain that control energy and appetite. Those who lack leptin don’t activate SiRT1, and are usually overweight. If you start a diet, and lose that first amount of weight, you’ll remove leptin from your blood and cravings will decrease. For a while, you’ll burn calories at your metabolic set-point….then the dreade plateau hits. You can’t just eat less than you already are, because you’ll get sick and cranky. If you up your exercise, you have to eat more.

Because of all this stress, you’ll probably break down muscle. You’ll lose weight, but you’ll also get more inflammation from free radical damage, mess with your digestive tract, and a whole lot of other nasty side effects. Eat enough, and you’ll feel better…but too much will make your body store the calories as fat. Don’t yo-yo diet! Eat in step with your leptin levels. Resveratrol can help here, once you’ve lost those first ten or fifteen pounds. You’ll have energy, feel great, and you’ll lose weight.

Resveratrol helps to keep the body from going into an inflamed state, and it also helps break that plateau. It can also help those who aren’t dieting. The French are already taking in resveratrol from all that wine they drink, and they are relatively thin. However, the French don’t usually overeat, and they eat a lot of fresh and organic food. They aren’t big snackers, either. Resveratrol’s effects can be negated by overeating.

Having a large waist is linked to an early death, and that risk goes up as you get bigger. Resveratrol is safe and natural, and it helps burn fat, which will shrink your waistline, and therefore make you live longer. Losing weight will help your heart, and resveratrol will help too.

There is quite a bit of animal research that proves that resveratrol helps the heart and the cells. It prevents plaque buildup in arteries, boosts nitric oxide levels, keeps platelets from clotting, and reduces inflammation in the circulatory system. One of the few human studies shows that resveratrol improves heart function in diabetics who’ve had a heart attack.

Resveratrol protects the body due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can also improve eye and bone health, help coordination, protect joints, the liver, and cells throughout the body. Quite a resume for one nutrient! The amount of interest in resveratrol pretty much assures us that we’ll be hearing a lot about it in the future. Until more research is done, a safe dose is 150 mg-700 mg, which is the average in current resveratrol supplements.

Of all the supposed superfoods, red wine is one of the best. Many people choose to get their grape extracts in pill form, but another method to get them is to drink a moderate amount of red wine. Red wine contains a whole group of polyphenols, that work together to improve health. They may even inhibit the growth and spread of breast cancer! Scientists have found that grape polyphenols consumed at normal levels (for a wine drinker) provide greater healing benefits than compounds ingested in isolated, capsule form.

Current studies show that these polyphenols can kill cancer cells, and that they are more effective than catechins, quercetin, or even resveratrol. They inhibit cell growth and migration in those cells that are most likely to metastasize. When studied in mice, grape polyphenols shrunk tumors and inhibited the spread of cancer.

Polyphenols are the compounds that give certain plants their medicinal properties. They also provide color and antioxidant power. Red and purple grapes have high polyphenol levels, as evidenced by their deep color. White grapes have much lower polyphenol content. 200+ polyphenols have been found in red wine, such as catechin, quercetin, and resveratrol. Polyphenols protect plants against radiation from the sun, and bacterial and fungal infection, so there’s no surprise that they help us too!

Sure, polyphenols in capsule form have their place, but those from natural sources are much better. Extracts can easily oxidize and lose potency, so eat a lot of veggies, fruit, and drink a moderate amount of red wine to bolster your body’s cells. From the days of Plato and Hippocrates, red wine has been promoted as a diuretic, pain reliever, and tranquilizer. Even Julius Caesar had his soldiers drink wine to prevent stomach upset and bleeding. The polyphenol content in red wine inhibits fat buildup in the liver, which is associated with alcohol drinking. Resveratrol can help in this area as well.

Researchers from the USF College of Medicine in Florida found that resveratrol reduces the amount of fat produced by the livers of mice who were given alcohol, and it also increased the metabolism of fat. Alcohol and resveratrol worked together to make an even greater impact. The scientists took six groups of mice. They fed each group a liquid diet. Half of the mice got no ethanol, and the other half were given progressively higher doses to simulate alcoholism. Four out of six groups got resveratrol. After a month, the mice were tested. The mice that got alcohol without resveratrol had three times the amount of fat as the other mice. The mice who got ethanol & resveratrol had a greater concentration of sirtuin, a chemical that helps prevent cell damage. This information comes from an edition of the American Journal of Physiology, Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology.

Resveratrol’s ability to decrease the growth of fat cells gives it credence as a weight-loss aid. Other experiments show that resveratrol prevents fat cells from reaching maturity, and inhibits fat storage. It also lowers production of substances linked to the onset of obesity-related illnesses like diabetes and atherosclerosis. Resveratrol heightens production of adiponectin, which is known to lower the risk of a heart attack. Red wine is a big part of the Mediterranean style of eating. This type of diet can reduce the incidence of premature death from a multitude of causes. After all, the French eat a lot of fatty foods, don’t exercise a lot, and smoke a lot more than most Americans do….and they have a lot lower death rate from heart disease. One reason for this may be their frequent drinking of red wine.

Chronic drinking increases neurological changes, but polyphenols like those found in red wine have strong antioxidant properties. Experiments on rats, fed either ethanol or red wine, proved that brain deterioration was lower in those rats who got the red wine. Those rats were able to complete tasks faster and more efficiently than the rats who only got ethanol. This led scientists to believe that red wine consumption doesn’t lead to mental decline, and in fact it may inhibit it.

There may be other benefits to red wine that science hasn’t discovered yet, and new breakthroughs, especially in the resveratrol supplement department, are guaranteed to be around the corner!
