There is a negative theory that trans-resveratrol causes a steep rise in activity of a particular gene that reduces a free radical, superoxide, to another free radical, hydrogen peroxide. The molecules of superoxide are not very toxic, but they may cause the degeneration of DNA over time. To combat against this, resveratrol supplements should also be comprised of vitamin C, enzymes and glutathione. Vitamin C has the effective counter-active task of reducing hydrogen peroxide to the more harmless water, and the presence of enzymes and glutathione ensure that vitamin C will continue to remain active for a prolonged period of time.
